12 Gauge Wire in mm: Diameter, mm2 and What to Order

12 gauge wire measures 2.05 mm across. Its cross-section is 3.31 mm², or 6,530 circular mils.

Both numbers get asked as “12 gauge in mm,” so both are here. The diameter is what you need for ferrules, glands and terminal ranges. The cross-section is what you need for a cable schedule — and it is not a size anyone manufactures.

The metric size to order

Metric cable comes in a fixed series. Around 12 AWG the steps are 2.5 mm², 4 mm², and 6 mm². Nothing exists between them.

Round up. 4 mm² is the smallest standard size that is not smaller than a 12 AWG conductor, and it gives you 21% more copper.

The size below, 2.5 mm², is 24% less. That is a real reduction in what the circuit can carry, not a rounding decision. Do not take it just because the number looks closer.

Where most conversions stop

Convert the area, round it up, done. Both steps correct, and both incomplete.

Cable is not verified by measuring copper. Nominal cross-section is a label — you cannot put calipers on a conductor and read 4 mm². What actually gets tested is DC resistance per kilometre at 20 °C, and every nominal size has a maximum it must not exceed.

Run the numbers on 12 AWG:

A 12 AWG conductor is 13% too resistive to pass as 4 mm². It clears the 2.5 mm² limit with room to spare.

So 12 AWG sits between two metric sizes and belongs to neither. Which direction you go depends on which way the substitution runs:

  • Replacing a 12 AWG design with metric cable? Take 4 mm². You get equal or better performance and you meet the resistance limit for what you ordered.
  • Someone offering 12 AWG against a 4 mm² spec? Reject it. The conductor resistance test will fail. This is the one that costs money, because it surfaces at a factory acceptance test rather than at the quote.

Almost every gauge behaves this way. The only exceptions are 2 AWG and 2/0, where the step up is just 4% and the conductor stays inside the limit. The reasoning is covered in why AWG doesn’t match metric sizes.

Stranding changes the diameter, not the size

The 2.05 mm figure is solid wire. 12 AWG is often installed solid in building wiring, so that number is directly useful here — but stranded conductors of the same nominal size are wider, because of the air between the strands.

At 4 mm², the maximum conductor diameters are:

Class 5 is 25% wider than solid at the same nominal size. Size a gland off the solid figure and take delivery of flexible cable, and it will not fit. What separates the classes is explained in conductor classes 1, 2, 5 and 6.

Where 12 AWG turns up

It is the workhorse gauge for 20 A branch circuits in North America — receptacles, small appliance circuits, general power. In control panels it appears where 14 AWG is not mechanically robust enough for the handling.

Ampacity depends on the insulation temperature rating, the installation method, the ambient temperature, and how many current-carrying conductors share the raceway. Two conductors in free air and six in a buried conduit are not the same circuit. Check the derating for your actual installation rather than reading a single number off a table.

How many mm is 12 gauge wire? 2.05 mm in diameter for solid wire, which is 80.8 mils or 0.0808 inches. Stranded 12 AWG is wider.

Is 12 AWG the same as 4 mm²? No. 12 AWG is 3.31 mm². 4 mm² is the metric size you order to replace it, and it is 21% larger. The two are not interchangeable on a specification, because a 12 AWG conductor will not meet the resistance limit for 4 mm².

Can I use 2.5 mm² instead of 12 AWG? 2.5 mm² has 24% less copper. It carries less current and drops more voltage over the same run. It is a downgrade, not an equivalent. Use it only if the circuit calculation supports it.

Why is 12 AWG not a round number in mm²? The gauge system is geometric, not decimal. Sizes step by a fixed ratio between 4/0 at 460 mils and 36 AWG at 5 mils, so the areas land wherever that progression puts them. The metric series was chosen as round numbers instead. See how the AWG system works.

Does 12 AWG stranded have a different mm² value? The nominal area is the same 3.31 mm². The overall diameter is larger and the resistance slightly higher, because the strands spiral and the copper path is longer than the cable.

Is 12 gauge or 14 gauge thicker? 12 gauge. Lower AWG numbers are thicker conductors. 12 AWG is 2.05 mm against 1.63 mm, and it has 59% more copper.
