Ask what 12 AWG is in millimetres and you can get two correct answers:
- 2.05 mm — the conductor diameter
- 3.31 mm² — the conductor cross-section
Both are right. They describe different things, and picking the wrong one causes real problems.
Which number for which job
Use the diameter (mm) when you are dealing with physical hardware. Ferrules, cable glands, terminal clamp ranges, conduit fill, drill sizes, and whether a lug will close. These all care about how thick the conductor is.
Use the cross-section (mm²) when you are dealing with cable specification and circuit design. Ampacity, voltage drop, cable schedules, and purchase orders all work in mm², because that is how metric cable is sold.
A quick test: if you are holding the conductor, you want the diameter. If you are filling in a document, you want the cross-section.
The relationship between them
For a solid round conductor, one converts to the other directly:
S = π × d² / 4 d = 2 × √(S / π)
For 12 AWG: π × 2.05² / 4 = 3.30 mm². The standard lists 3.31, and the small difference comes from rounding the diameter in mils before conversion.
Note the squaring. Doubling the diameter quadruples the area. That is why a conductor two gauge numbers thicker feels only slightly bigger in the hand but carries substantially more current.
The trap: diameter only applies to solid wire
This is where people get caught.
The diameter figures published for AWG sizes are for solid wire. A stranded conductor of the same nominal size is wider, because there is air between the strands.
At 4 mm² — the metric size covering 12 AWG — the maximum conductor diameters are:

That is a 25% spread at one nominal size. At 35 mm² the spread runs from 6.7 mm solid to 9.2 mm flexible — 41%.
So if you size a gland from the conversion table and the drum arrives as flexible cable, it will not fit. Use the manufacturer’s overall conductor diameter, not the solid figure, whenever the cable is stranded. See conductor classes for what each class means.
Why both questions get asked the same way
Search data shows people asking “12 AWG in mm” far more often than “12 AWG in mm²” — the diameter question is roughly four times more common. But the two phrasings are used interchangeably, and plenty of people typing “in mm” actually want the cable size.
