14 Gauge Wire in mm and mm2: Diameter and Cable Size

14 gauge wire measures 1.63 mm across, and its cross-section is 2.08 mm².

Unlike most gauges, both numbers get asked about equally here. 14 AWG sits right at the boundary between people picking cable for a circuit and people picking hardware for a conductor, so this page answers both.

The metric size, and the gap on either side

2.08 mm² is not a size anyone sells. The metric series runs 1.5, 2.5, 4 mm² and 14 AWG lands between the first two.

Round up to 2.5 mm² and you get 20% more copper. Round down to 1.5 mm² and you lose 28% — the largest downward gap of any common branch-circuit gauge.

That asymmetry is the thing to notice. Going up costs you 20% more copper for a modest price increase. Going down costs you more than a quarter of the conductor. When in doubt at this gauge, the round-up is the cheap mistake and the round-down is the expensive one.

14 AWG does not pass as 2.5 mm²

A 14 AWG conductor runs about 8.28 Ω/km. The limit for 2.5 mm² is 7.41 Ω/km.

14 AWG is roughly 12% too resistive to be accepted as 2.5 mm². It clears 1.5 mm² easily at 12.1 Ω/km.

So the substitution runs one way only:

  • Replacing a 14 AWG design with metric cable? Take 2.5 mm². You get more copper than the original design assumed, which is the safe direction.
  • Someone offering 14 AWG against a 2.5 mm² spec? It fails on conductor resistance. On a short run nobody checks. On a long circuit it shows up as voltage drop the design did not allow for.

This is the normal pattern across the range — only 2 AWG and 2/0 escape it. The reasoning is in why AWG doesn’t match metric sizes.

Conductor diameter and terminations

1.63 mm is solid wire, and 14 AWG is frequently installed solid in building wiring, so that figure is directly useful here — unlike at feeder sizes where nothing is solid.

For stranded and flexible versions, the maximum conductor diameters at 2.5 mm² are:

Where 14 AWG is used

15 A branch circuits in North America — lighting, general receptacle circuits, and the smaller side of residential and light commercial power wiring. In panels it appears on control wiring where mechanical robustness matters.

Ampacity depends on the insulation temperature rating, the installation method, the ambient temperature, and conductor grouping. Overcurrent protection for this gauge is also constrained by code in ways a raw ampacity table does not show. Check the requirements that govern your installation before sizing a breaker to it.
