Compare that to 1 mm², where the exact answer is an odd gauge nobody carries, or 4 mm², where the two available options are 17% under and 32% over. At 0.5 mm² the two systems simply happen to line up.

Below 20 AWG there is no metric size to round down to, and the round-up gets rapidly absurd. 24 AWG converting to a conductor with two and a half times the copper is not a conversion in any useful sense.

Note that class 2, class 5 and class 6 all share the same 1.1 mm maximum at this size. What separates them is strand count and strand fineness, not overall diameter.

Neither 0.5 mm² nor 20 AWG appears in the general ampacity tables. The metric tables start at 1.5 mm², and the American ones stop at 18 AWG.

That is not an oversight. This is a signal and control conductor, and where it carries current the rating comes from the equipment standard or the rules for flexible cords rather than the power circuit tables.

Where 0.5 mm² is used

Control panel wiring, instrumentation and signal runs, relay coils, alarm and security cable, internal equipment wiring, and small flexible cords.

Termination often matters more than current at this size. Spring-clamp and push-in terminals, crimp contacts and ferrules all have a minimum they will hold reliably, and 0.5 mm² is around where that becomes a design consideration.
