2.5 mm² to AWG: Closest Gauge and Safe Substitute

2.5 mm² converts to **14 AWG** by cross-sectional area. But 14 AWG is not what you should order.

That distinction matters more going this direction than the other, and it catches people out constantly.

14 AWG is nearer the number. 12 AWG is the one that does not downgrade the circuit.

Converting AWG to metric, you round up and get a slightly bigger cable — harmless. Converting metric to AWG, the nearest gauge is usually smaller, and installing it means the circuit carries less than the design intended.

The resistance test settles it

Metric cable is verified by DC resistance per kilometre at 20 °C, not by measuring copper. For 2.5 mm² the limit is 7.41 Ω/km for solid and stranded conductors, and 7.98 Ω/km for flexible.

14 AWG does not meet the requirement for 2.5 mm². If a specification calls for 2.5 mm² conductor resistance and someone supplies 14 AWG against it, the test fails.

12 AWG passes with margin. That is why it is the substitute, not just because it has more copper.

Conductor diameter

2.5 mm² is a cross-section, not a measurement. A solid conductor of that area works out to 1.784 mm across, but the standard does not specify a nominal diameter — it sets maximums by construction class:

For comparison, solid 14 AWG measures 1.63 mm and solid 12 AWG measures 2.05 mm.

If you are sizing glands or ferrules, work from the class you are actually buying. Class 5 at 2.4 mm is 35% wider than solid 14 AWG at 1.63 mm, and that gap decides whether hardware fits. See conductor classes 1, 2, 5 and 6.

Why 2.5 mm² comes up so often

It is probably the most installed cable size in the world. Socket circuits across most of Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia are wired in 2.5 mm², the way North America uses 12 AWG for receptacles. So when a design crosses between the two systems, this is the size that crosses most often.

The pairing is closer than most. 12 AWG is 3.31 mm² against 2.5 mm² — a 32% overshoot, which is more copper than needed but no functional problem. Going the other way, 12 AWG rounds up to 4 mm², a 21% step.
