The metric series stops at 0.5 mm² because the general conductor standard covers power cables and cords. Conductors finer than that belong to the telecommunications and data cabling standards, which specify them by their electrical behaviour rather than by cross-section.

A 26 AWG conductor runs about 134.6 Ω/km. The limit for 0.5 mm² is 36.0 Ω/km. The two are not comparable in any practical sense.

What replaces the cross-section

At 26 AWG the conductor is chosen for signal behaviour, not for current-carrying area:

Impedance and capacitance govern data pairs. Both are set by the conductor diameter, insulation thickness and twist rate together. A "bigger" conductor is not an upgrade — it changes the impedance and the cable stops meeting its standard.

Loop resistance governs long signal runs. 134.6 Ω/km is 269 Ω over a 1,000 m out-and-back loop, which is enough to matter on a powered sensor or a current loop.

Flex life governs anything that moves. At this size the conductor is usually finely stranded, and how finely decides whether it survives.

If a drawing calls for 26 AWG, source it as 26 AWG. Converting it to a metric size is not a translation, it is a substitution with different electrical properties.

0.404 mm is solid wire, which is 15.9 mils or 0.0159 inches.

For context, the finest conductor covered by the metric standard is 0.5 mm², where the maximum diameters run 0.9 mm solid and 1.1 mm stranded — more than double the 26 AWG figure. Where 26 AWG is used

Ribbon cable, internal equipment and PCB wiring, telephone and structured cabling patch cords, small connector harnesses, thermocouple extension leads, and hookup wire in instrumentation.

It is fine enough that termination is the limiting factor. Many crimp contacts and terminal blocks have a minimum they will hold reliably, and 26 AWG is at or below it for a lot of industrial hardware.
